FAQ’s

Is this like UFC?

No. Most emphatically NOT. This is about learning a martial skill in a safe environment and putting that skill and yourself to the test in a POINT SPARRING sceanario.

Point sparring? That sounds kind of wimpy. Who would watch that?

Believe me, three 2-minute rounds of point sparring can get pretty intense. You are making firm contact. What does this mean? That if you really let go, it would be like getting hit in a full contact competition. But this show is really about empowerment, learning a martial skill and using that process to conquer you fear and become something new.

Really?

Yes, really.

How would you know?

All the principals involved in COMBAT MODEL are black belt ranking or higher.

Oh. Will we be getting to that level?

In a month? No. But the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

What am I in for if I sign up for this?

You will be flown to a tropical island with nine other girls. You will be part of a five-girl team. You will be training in Kung-Fu for six hours per day, five days per week under the supervision of two martial arts masters and their four assistant trainers. You will be fed and clothed. As well, we you will be living in a villa at least of the quality you see in our trailer. You will have no contact with the outside world for the duration of the show except in case of emergency. We want you to be bonding with your teammates, not tweeting about this experience to all and sundry. This is not like going to the gym. We require all your focus and attention if we are to train you in a skill to a level that will allow you to compete.

No Twitter? No Facebook? Are you serious?

Yes. No contact with the outside world for 6 weeks unless there is an emergency. Updating your Facebook status does not qualify. If this is impossible for you, PLEASE DO NOT APPLY.

Okay! Okay! How much does this pay?

That’s confidential but I will say we will make it worth your while.

I live in France. Will you fly me to the island?

You bet. We will fly you there (and back home again) from anywhere in the world. COMBAT MODEL is an international competition.

Can I bring my child?

No.

Who are the girls in the trailer?

Model friends of the director, Dan Couto.

Did they really train?

Yes.

They look pretty good! Are you sure they only trained for one month?

Less actually. This is a tribute to Sifu Rupert Harvey and Sifu Simon Chong‘s teaching skills. And it was strange and cool how each girl developed here on specialty. Sarah was the Punching Queen and Marie developed what can only be described as ballbearing hips. Her roundhouse kicks literally came out of nowhere, to the point she was catching even experienced martial artists by surprise.

What if I trained as a kid for a couple of years, then stopped? Does that mean I can’t enter?

We would have to know the following details to make that determination:

  • How old were you when you trained?
  • What style did you train in?
  • How long did you train?
  • What rank did you reach?

How hard is this really?

Hard. But it can be done and even if you don’t win, you will come out of this a very different person. Guaranteed.

What are the chances I’m going to get hurt?

COMBAT MODEL has safety as it’s primary concern. We are providing an entertainment that is focused on the process, not on bloodsport. That’s why the fights are point contact. We will do everything in our power to insure no one sustains a serious injury. You will probably get bruised but again, this is part of the process. That said, nothing is guaranteed.

Can I keep any of the outfits? They’re really cool!

Sorry, no.

Wah! I want one!

Wait. Waiting builds character. We are in negotiations with a major clothing supplier to make the training and fighting outfits available to the general public.

Can I drink and smoke during the training?

You can but I wouldn’t advise it. After all, are you serious about winning $100,000? Everyone has an equal chance. Why skew your odds by polluting yourself needlessly?
